Wasted Wii-kend That's what I had this past weekend. I returned back home late Friday to find that Nintendo had finally shipped an evaluation version of the Wii to me! So I spent virtually every waking hour between 6am Saturday morning and 8am Monday morning playing all the cool games, checking out the neat new features, and getting all my friends involved with the innovative remote controllers. What's my verdict? You'll have to read my detailed review, complete with images, for more on the Wii. But I can guarantee you one thing: A Wii is definitely going to be under the tree this holiday season. ADVERTISEMENT | Playstation 3 Preview Waiting for the PS3 instead? No problem, we got you covered there too. We just posted a preview of the PS3 debug unit we received last week, and the results are stunning. If you can pay the freight, this is a great looking machine! Our story has details on performance, amazing screen shots and much more. Finally this week the consoles will all be out. We'll bring you details as they happen on all three. One early report says that many PS/2 games have problems running in the PS3. Our report has those details. Get Your Blue Screen of Death Screen Saver From an Unlikely Place Programmers have such a great sense of humor. And the guys at Sysinternals were some of the funniest. Luckily, even though Microsoft bought them, there piece de resistance is still available for free on the web. What is it? A great screensaver that simulates BSOD - and even makes it look like the disk is running! Our story details where you can find this free piece of code, and how to get it and start fooling your friends and co workers today! Telephony Updates Include New Phones for Cingular, Sprint, VOIP and More There's so much going on in the world of telephony, I hardly know where to start. Let's start with the latest story, which comes from Sprint. Sprint purchased Nextel for its customers and iDen technology and now finally they are merging the two together. Check out our story detailing the when's and why's of a new handset that relies on the Sprint network for voice, and Nextel for push-to-talk. Samsung and Cingular are in the news with a nifty new slim phone with full-on keyboard, called "BlackJack". Read our in-depth review here. And Yahoo and Linksys are teaming up to offer a VOIP cordless phone for home and small offices. It's dual mode - and our story has all the details. Motorola Buys Good Technology But the biggest news in the cellphone world? Motorola has purchased Good Technology, the biggest direct competitor to RIM. Now Motorola is in direct competition with the company responsible for the Blackberry. What does this mean? We'll certainly see more Good-based phones from Moto (the Q is the only one now). But it also means that Motorola will avoid NTP patent problems, like those plaguing Palm and Rim. What else? Our story has all the details, including updated information hot off the presses. 10 Ways to Slack Off at Work Your workplace is probably not that much different from mine - except mine includes about 8 flat panel TVs, an Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii. But you can slack off at work thanks to technology too - and you won't have to hide in the bathroom with your DS either. We've just posted our favorite ten devices that will help you waste time until the closing bell, for not a lot of money. Our story details the USB-powered missle launcher, a finger playing drum set, and a mini-candy grabber that echos the three-clawed vending machine immortalized in Toy Story as "The Claaaw". Don't miss our hilarious story for ideas and more. Java Headed to Open Source In the "Jeez, what took 'em so long" category, we have this week's announcement that Java is finally going open source, and will be released into the wild freely. It's probably too late for the popular cross platform language, which coulda been a contender for world domination. Now it's just one of many. Our story has details on how and when it's going free. Better late than never, I suppose. Volkswagen's New Passat Delivers a Ton of Tech I've wanted an Audi for years. I know I could save money buy buying a VW, but for some reason it never seemed attractive. Until now. According to our hands-on review, the Passat delivers all the great tech that made the Audi famous, from the multi-information display in the middle to the advanced paddle shifters. And it costs thousands less too. Now I know what car to buy - when it's available used in about 3 years! Read our review for all the details. Laptop Rage Sweeps Through Hollywood OK, it's a slow news day, and I'm tired from testing the Wii all weekend. But I did find it amusing that actress Denise Richards hurled a photographer's notebook off of the balcony of her hotel in Richmond, BC Canada. Why did she do such a thing? What happened to the laptop? Some questions are unanswerable, but our shocking story details what we know now. Are no laptops safe from these pampered stars? | SUBCRIBE TO PC MAGAZINE AND SAVE 87% Subscribe today and save 87% off the newsstand price. That's the message from nVidia, as the company releases the GeForce 8 series architecture, and line of graphics chips. Instead, the company has built a chip that consists of a giant pool of floating point engines, each of which can be allocated to any graphics processing task on an as-needed basis. The new architecture is also designed specifically for DirectX 10 - the Vista-only Direct3D interface that's changing the world of graphics and gaming. We've got an in-depth look at the architecture behind the new 8800, including the details behind "early Z culling", and the new image quality enhancers found in the "Lumenex" subsystem. All About Power, Chips and Computing A few years ago we didn't worry about how much power our CPUs consumed, or how to cool them. But that's all changed today, as power consumption is as important as raw throughput - especially if you're using a notebook or building a server farm. In fact, I was talking with some folks from UPS-vendor APC, and they said that soon it'll cost more to power and cool a server than the original purchase price! Check out our detailed explainer, analysis and primer on how CPUs now manage power, and the interactions between the battery, plug, OS and chip to save energy. | | Important Stories and More from Ziff Davis By Jim Louderback | | | | A Great Time to Buy a PC Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal may think it's a bad time to buy a PC, but I disagree. And a new forecast of PC Sales this holiday season bears me out. It's not good for the companies that make and sell computers, but what's bad for them is good for you and me. Let me explain: our story details how PC sales may falter in the fourth quarter, as many uninformed (or, presumably, informed by the Wall Street Journal) put off purchases. That means climbing inventory, particularly at the high end. But if you're reading this newsletter you are, by definition, smarter than the average PC user. While they wait like lemmings for Microsoft's Vista OS, you can swoop in, buy a wicked fast new PC, and save hundreds during the fire sales coming up over the next 60 days. Check out our story for details on the sales forecasts, and which machines are likely to offer the best deals. And remember when you buy, look for a PC that'll support Vista, and a free upgrade to the new OS. Happy hunting! ADVERTISEMENT | Better Get Your LCDs Soon Too That's the word from Samsung, who says that a shortage of flat panels might reduce availability and perhaps even drive up prices next year. Our story has comments from Samsung execs, and details on how larger panels are continuing to drive the market. Spyware Firm Gets Fined 3 Million Bucks Formerly called 180Solutions, Zango is now poorer 3 million dollars. The company was found guilty of installing nasty software on PCs without permission, and then making it virtually impossible for that software to be removed. The company must do more than just pay up, it has to also make it easier for people to remove the spyware, and can't install software again without permission. Finally, the FTC is getting serious about spyware. Took 'em long enough! Our story has the details. Cool Pictures From Annual PhotoPlus Show All the new cameras were there (well, most of them, at least). But software and accessories took center stage at this year's PhotoPlus Expo. We sent our camera analyst, Terry Sullivan, down to check out what was new, and he came back with 14 sweet items that any photographer or camera nut just has to check out. Don't miss his reporter notebook, slideshow and more, right from the show floor. Car Fans Get Theirs Too Prefer cars to cameras? No problem, we've got you covered too. DLTV host Patrick Norton stopped by the specialty equipment show in Las Vegas to see all the cool new gear that's integrating PCs and Cars. His slideshow and reporters notebook uncovers all sorts of digital wizardry that will turn your car into a rolling office, entertainment center, high-test hot rod, or rolling node on the information superhighway. Don't miss it! Office 2007 Finally Done It's done, says Microsoft, as the company ships the final set of Office 2007 bits off to the manufacturing plants, where it can be burned, packaged and shipped out to the world. I like Office 2007 a lot - the new interface is very usable, and everything works better together. Our story has details on when you can actually get your own copy, and don't miss our full-on review, which explains exactly what we like - and don't like - in the new system. Microsoft Cuts Linux Deal, Less Evil Than Ever That's the conclusion of ExtremeTech editor Loyd Case, after he heard of two different moves by the big software company. First, it cut a deal with Novell to enable easier interoperability between Linux and Windows. Our news story has the details on that one. Then Microsoft relaxed its Vista licensing terms. Wow! Read Loyd's analysis of all this, and how Microsoft might be waking up to market realities! Dvorak Sees Only Tears in Microsoft/Linux Agreement It's not peace, it's war! That's John C. Dvorak's assessment of the surprise link-up between Novell and Microsoft. Why does he see brickbats in the bordello? It all comes back to Larry Ellison, and the outsize war between Microsoft and Oracle. Read his analysis for a better understanding of how a "shim" lets Microsoft get around the GPL, and produce a "proprietary" Linux version. It's scary reading, but he could be on to something. Cingular's High Speed PDA/Phone Reviewed It's a high-speed mobile office, and also a pretty sharp looking phone too. The new 8525 from Cingular (again, who names these things???), includes HSDPA high-speed networking, a fast processor and stereo sound over a Bluetooth headset. It's even got a large querty keyboard although it's not as good as it could be. Check out our review of this nifty new device, along with our slideshow of images, to find out why we gave it an Editors Choice award. It's no Q - but it gets the job done with more power. Changing of the Guard at Webroot The popular anti-spyware and malware company has a new chief. Founder David Moll has decided to step down, and will be replaced by the former top exec of McAfee. What's the problem? I talked with David on Friday, and he said it was simple - he's good at startups, but not at growing a company from a billion dollars to enterprise size. He'll be on the board, while the new CEO moves from the board to the hot seat. Our story has the details on the transition, which hopefully will enable the company to not miss a beat. New Consoles Could Win War of Living Room This is the month that we finally get to see the new Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii! These new consoles promise great game play, but they can do so much more. I'm particularly bullish about their ability to serve as the living room entertainment hub. We took a close look at the Wii, PS3 and the Xbox 360 to see how well they serve that need. Should the Media Center PC be afraid? Our story has the details. Plus we just got our hands on the refreshed Xbox 360, which adds 1080p and other neat features. How did it work? Check out our hands on analysis for details. | SUBCRIBE TO PC MAGAZINE AND SAVE 87% Subscribe today and save 87% off the newsstand price. Alas, the rubbery, cuddly Pleo dinosaur won't make it, but it has come a long way. Created by a former Furby inventor, it has a wide range of emotions and actions, and is the exact opposite of the RoboRaptor. For pictures, analysis, and when you can buy one, check out our story. If only they released it this year, you'd forget all about those consoles! See Me On DL.TV While Patrick was at Sema, I had a chance to co-host the DL.TV show with Robert Heron. Reviews on the web were decidedly mixed - some loved it, others wished me a speedy return back to the land of the printed word. You can decide for yourself, by stopping by www.dl.tv, and checking out episode 109. Watch it, and decide for yourself if it's interesting, or just plain dull! Oh, and let me put in another plug for the weekly What's New Now podcast, where I go behind the key stories of the week - with Patrick Norton and Roger Chang - to help make sense of all this craziness. Listen to it today, or subscribe via itunes. Voting Day One last comment that doesn't involve technology at all. If you're reading this in the US, it's Election Day! And that means you need to get out and vote. Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, it all doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that you head to your polling place and cast that vote! Oh, and because I just can't help myself, here's a story with lots of details on where to find voting results on the web. Go vote, and then have fun watching the returns! That's it for today's What's New Now. Remember, you can always read the same stuff online at the blog--www.whatsnewnow.com. Or subscribe to the RSS feed. Jim Louderback Jim_Louderback@ziffdavis.com

 | | Important Stories and More from Ziff Davis By Jim Louderback | | November 2 2006 | Volume 5, Number 84 | | | Intel Quad-Core Arrives If you thought two cores were good, then what about four? That's the question, and Intel, today, has the answer. The company has just released the first Quad-Core chips, and of course we have chapter, verse, and reviews of the first systems. So how well do these new four-on-the-floor chips perform? Our story has the chip architecture details, and explores the quad-controversy - are these really true quad-cores? Plus we've got reviews of the first two systems - from Dell and Gateway -- running that super-fast chip. Read all about it here first! ADVERTISEMENT | Valve Redesigns Games for Quad Core There will be many reasons to adopt a Quad Core CPU, but it looks like gaming will be the first killer application. Valve Software, the makers of Half Life 2 and the Steam online distribution engine sees big benefits in Quad Core, calling it "more than twice as interesting as Dual Core." We've got an in-depth look at what Valve is doing, and why they think this is "the most significant development since 3D cards." Heady words, but Valve is backing it up. We've got the details on their approach, and why they love it. PayPal Gets Bombed Yes, literally. Someone lit off a bomb outside of PayPal's San Jose headquarters, and it's turned into a real scare inside Silicon Valley. Luckily no one was hurt, but the company has put a gag order on all employees, so details are trickling out like taffy. Our story has the details we've got today, but the authorities are on the case, and claim to have some good leads. We'll keep you up to date on the story! Google Buys JotSpot So did they buy the technology, or did they just want to "acquire" Excite and JotSpot founder Joe Kraus? That's the big question in the latest Google purchase, of programmable Wiki vendor JotSpot. I visited JotSpot in its early days, and was impressed with the beginnings - it was like marrying the early dBase language with a Wiki core. I felt (and still do) that JotSpot needs easier-to-use development tools, but the concept was sound. Why did Google buy them? Our story has the details on that. How much did they pay? The principals are mum, but rumor has it that the cost was about 50 million - a rounding error for Google. Secret Wiki Used to Spy on World The Defense Department likes Wikipedia and the whole wiki concept so much, it just launched its own super-secret version, called Intellipedia. It includes 28,000 pages, and 3600 registered users from 16 different intelligence agencies in the US. What's inside? The State Department's annual country reports on terrorism, details on national security risks, and probably details on where you had dinner last night. Our story has the details, but unfortunately we don't have a log in for you to try. But I wish we did! Cingular Launches Mobile Music Service So much for the rumors of Cingular hooking up with iTunes. The big US cellphone provider has decided to go it alone, developing its own music service. Well, not completely alone - they've teamed up with satellite radio provider XM to deliver music channels to cell phones, along with Napster and Yahoo. Just no Apple. Is this a good idea? Our story has the details, but perhaps the phone really will become the all-in-one device after all. Symantec Launches Security for Smart Phones Somewhere, in a box in my basement, I have a copy of Norton's first anti-virus product for mobile phones. It never took off. But now the company is trying again, this time with a product focused on Microsoft Smartphones. The new Windows Mobile security software is now available - although so far the flood of cell phone malware hasn't materialized. Product looking for market? Prescient software? Read our story, and then you decide. Grammy Awards Group Comes Up With Seven Music Downloading Tips Don't be evil. That's the general gist of the seven rules developed by a group of music industry vets. Designed as a kinder, gentler version of the RIAA's tough love, the seven rules are designed to find a middle ground between the combative music industry and the embittered music consuming public. It'll probably fail, but at least they are trying. Check out our story on the seven rules, along with the new website that tries to make a difference. My favorite is rule number six: "Offer What Piracy Doesn't" - gee, if it was that easy, they'd have already figured it out, right? Dvorak Misses the GPS Point John hates GPS devices. That much is clear from his recent tirade. But in amidst the ridicule and scorn are some surprisingly good ideas, including replacing the lame turn-by-turn voice with Homer Simpson or his uber-boss Montgomery Burns. But he's really down on the technology. Check out his diatribe to find out why, and then leave your own comments for him in the forum. Building a Fun Gaming System Looking for a little spice in your PC life? Check out our latest build it project, which aims to put together an SLI gaming system that's not too expensive, but has a wide range of interesting capabilities. It's not expensive, but it does deliver some really good performance at a great price. It also includes some nifty, fun extras. Read the story for details on the system, and how to build it yourself. | SUBCRIBE TO PC MAGAZINE AND SAVE 87% Subscribe today and save 87% off the newsstand price. It focuses on how one consulting company made a boatload of money using remote support and remote sales tools. Word of caution, the event is sponsored by the company that makes the tool - but as long as you take that grain of salt with your attendance you'll likely get a lot out of it. At the very least, you can see what a leading IT consulting firm is doing to help drive revenue and reduce costs. You can find out more about the free event, and sign up, here. Car Personality Affects How You Drive It's called "Auto-anthropomorphism", or the tendency of drivers to think of their cars as living, breathing beings. And that internalization of a car's personality affects how you drive. So if you think your car is a friendly sort, like my own "silver bullet", you drive better than if you think it's a nasty, hulking brute. Check out our story for the details, but that car personality may be driving you to distraction. That's it for today's What's New Now.
